Abstract:
This article analyses the crisis of the New Zealand economy in the period preceeding the reform of the government economic policy undertaken since 1984. The importance of the agrifood sector in the New Zealand economy is shown. The article explains why the farm sector was the main target of the cutbacks in public expenditure and analyses the evolution of the costs of the agricultural policy in New Zealand. Finally, it explains what components of agricultural policy have been maintained after ten years of reform.
