Abstract:
The paper presents the different steps of the systemic analysis applied for identifying appropriate policy and management interventions in irrigation systems in Pakistan. A key element of this analysis is the building of a representation of the irrigation systems considered that combines relevant biophysical and de- cisional processes. This representation is the basis for the development of disciplinary activities, and for their integration into a simple but robust integrated model used for assessing the impact of potential interventions. The authors stress the non-universal character of this representation that has been built according to the issues, spatial and temporal scales and irrigation system investigated. This is further confirmed by the diversity of representations presented in the literature. The limits of the approach and its other possible uses are discussed.
