Abstract: It was already fairly late in the development of economic theory that aggregation of individual economic relations into macro relations was recognized as a serious problem. This is illustrated in this paper by pointing to the more or less incidental way in which aggregation problems are mentioned and solved in the older literature till the famous Econometrica debate in the late forties. In particular, we try to disentangle the notions of consistency and representativity.
