Boosting Cocoa Farming Income: The Interaction Effect of Access to Agricultural Extension Services and Farmer Association on Adoption of Approved Pesticides

Abstract: Innovation adoption is key to advancing agricultural productivity and improving farmers' economic welfare. However, farmers may exhibit reluctance towards embracing new innovations, necessitating efforts to overcome this resistance. This study aims to explore the interactive impacts of agricultural extension services and farmers organization on the adoption of approved pesticides and income generation from cocoa farming in Osun State, Nigeria. Probit and mediation analyses were used to analyze the data. The findings revealed a synergistic relationship between extension services and farmer associations in promoting the adoption of approved pesticides, increasing the likelihood of adoption by 23.9%. Moreover, mediation analysis indicated that the combined effect of extension services and farmer associations accounted for approximately 40.7% of cocoa2 farming income, with pesticide adoption partially mediating the effect by 0.3%. Hence, to effectively facilitate innovation adoption, concerted efforts are needed to strengthen both agricultural extension services and farmer associations, capitalizing on their complementary effects.
