Abstract:
Educational institutions – especially ‘allgemeinbildende Regelschulen des ersten Bildungswegs’1 – are an important part of services of general interest. Therefore, in order to create a nationwide data basis on school accessibility, we analyzed the regional accessibility of ‘allgemeinbildende Regelschulen des ersten Bildungswegs’ subdivided in primary schools, schools with ‘Sekundarstufe 1’2 and schools with ‘Sekundarstufe 2’3 with the help of the Thünen-Accessibility- Model. The results provide a nationwide and small scale (in a 250 m x 250 m grid) picture about school accessibility in Germany below the administrative level of the communities. As such the data allow to identify regions in Germany with already suboptimal school accessibility and re-gions where future school closures are going to intensify the present situation. The analysis leads to following overall conclusion: At present all analyzed schools are good acces-sible by car. That is within a travel time of 30 minutes. By bicycle in great parts of Germany pri-mary schools and schools with Sekundarstufe 1 are accessible. That is within a travel time of 15 minutes 91 % of the population can reach a primary school by bicycle and 77 % of the population a school with Sekundarstufe 1. However, in large parts of the rural areas by foot school are bad accessible.
