The Effect Of Heptachlor Contamination On Dairy Sales In Oahu

Eileen van Ravenswaay, Mark E. Smith and Stanley Thompson ()

No 292726, Staff Paper Series from Michigan State University, Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics

Abstract: Chemical contamination of livestock can have a number of economic impacts on producers. One of these is lost sales due to consumer reaction to news of a contamination incident. This paper reports a procedure that can be used to estimate this type of sales loss and applies it to the 1982 case of heptachlor contamination of milk on Oahu, Hawaii.
