Abstract:
The aim of this study was to assess an economic and environmental efficiency of winter wheat in Wielkopolska and Śląsk Region in 2010. The ananlysis comprised 17 agricultural holdings from Polish FADN database with cultivation winter wheat area ranging from 21 to 50 ha. The non-parametric input oriented model of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was used to benchmark a productive efficiency. In the analyzed group of farms, 59% were technically inefficient. The average technical efficiency for the whole group was 0.91, whereas in the group of inefficient farms, it amounted to 0.84. In order to achieve full technical efficiency, inefficient farms should reduce inputs by an average of 16% while maintaining the same outputs. The results of the economic analysis showed that the total costs of production could decrease from od 366,52 to 1020,56 PLN per ha, and from 0,07 to 0,21 PLN per kg of grains, if inefficient units were converted to an efficient operation. This could be achieved by modifying the farm management and applying of new production technologies. Optimization of nitrogen fertilization on inefficient farms will decrease its emissions by 5.1 kg N2 O.
