Roczniki (Annals), 2017, vol. 2016, issue 3

Abstract: Nitrate fertilizers are the main source of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from agricultural soils. The purpose of this research was to calculate N2O fluxes based on Tier 1 and 2 IPCC methodology in arable farms. The N2O emissions on Tier 1 level were performed by using BioGrace tool, whereas on Tier 2 using Global Nitrous Oxide Calculator (GNOC). N2O emissions in tested farm on Tier 1 expressed in kg N per hectare were as follows: winter wheat – 4,6; spring wheat – 3,63 kg; rapeseed – 4,34 kg; sugar beets – 4,52 kg and maize – 4,08 kg. N2O emissions calculated according to Tier 2 were twice smaller. N2O emission in whole farm calculated according to the methodology Tier 1 was 84% higher than calculated according to Tier 2. Direct N2O emissions from the use of nitrogen fertilizers and crop residues in BioGrace accounted for 78%, and in GNOC – 73%. The remaining 22 and 27% were indirect emissions from nitrogen leaching and absorption. The results show that the use of the GNOC calculator, which takes into account the local variability improves the estimation accuracy of N2O emissions.
