Abstract: Sugar cane is a basic raw material for the production of sugar and bioethanol throughout the world. There is strong competition between cane sugar and beet sugar on the market. Changes in market policies in developed countries and bilateral agreements lead to a gradual decline of beet sugar share in the world production of sugar. The cultivation of sugar cane shows a dynamic development which reflects growing demand for sugar and policies related to the energy sector in Brazil, where large quantities of sugar cane and molasses are being processed for ethanol. Moreover sugar cane and by-products of its processing are also used in other areas. Such strong competitive position of sugar cane results from high yield per area unit and low production costs. / Synopsis. Trzcina cukrowa jest podstawowym surowcem do produkcji cukru i bioetanolu na świecie. Na świtowym rynku cukru występuje silna konkurencja między cukrem trzcinowym i buraczanym. Zamiany w polityki rynkowej w cukrownictwie w uprzemysłowionych krajach oraz bilateralne porozumienia handlowe powodują, że systematycznie zmniejsza się udział cukru buraczanego w światowej produkcji. Uprawa trzciny cukrowej dynamicznie rozwija się, a decyduje o tym rosnący popyt na cukier na świecie oraz polityka energetyczna Brazylii, która duże ilości trzciny cukrowej i melasy przetwarza na bioetanol. Trzcina cukrowa i produkty uboczne jej przetwórstwa znajdują zastosowanie także w innych sektorach gospodarki. Silna pozycja konkurencyjna trzciny cukrowej wynika z dużej produktywności z jednostki powierzchni oraz niskich kosztów produkcji.
