The Gross Output and Net Returns from Agriculture in Different Regions of Australia

Abstract: The gross and unsubsidized net agricultural production from the major Australian farming regions have been calculated from data collected by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. The results suggest that the wheat and sheep zone is the most important farming region, producing one third of the nation's agricultural gross revenue and one half of its agricultural net output. Important contributions to gross and net agricultural output are also made by the pastoral and high rainfall sheep zones. Because of the high level of subsidy, the dairying zone makes no contribution to net output although it produces fifteen per cent of the nation's gross agricultural revenue. Australia's irrigated lands produce approximately ten per cent of national gross and net agricultural output.
