Abstract:
This paper deals with the reception of the New Institutional Economics in Spanish historiography. From a critical dialogue with the pioneering work by Juan Carmona and James Simpson, The Labyrinth of Spanish Agriculture (published in 2003), the authors reflect on the epistemolofical limits of neo-institutionalist project and propose a theoretical alternative approach to the historical institutions that governed farmers behavior since the mid-19th century until the first third of the 20th. Unlike the overly instrumental interpretation of the institutions and of the rationality of economic agents, in this paper institutions are considered as communitarian collections of procedures and norms -often sub-intentionally or super-intentional produced- that provide the social actor with the identity the individual needs no only to make calculations on the information he receives but also to evaluate this information.
