Nicholas M. Thuroczy

No 310852, Marketing Research Reports from United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Marketing Service, Transportation and Marketing Program

Abstract: Excerpts from the report Preface: This study of wholesale prices of long- and medium-grain rice and their seasonal behavior is part of a broad program of research on marketing margins of agricultural products designed to improve the efficiency of the marketing system. Studies of margins for other grains are also planned. A number of important economic questions are involved in the wholesale marketing of long- and medium-grain rice. What is the most favorable time to sell these two types of rice? What is the competitive relationship between them? How do prices of different types of rice behave in relation to each other during the main part of the marketing season? What are the main forces behind such behavior? To what extent have Federal programs influenced normal price relationship? And, finally, how do seasonal price changes affect milling margins? The purpose of this study is to provide answers to these questions. The information is intended to assist management in making decisions for more efficient marketing.
