Orval Kerchner

No 313538, Marketing Research Reports from United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Marketing Service, Transportation and Marketing Program

Abstract: Excerpts from the report: Modern highways and truck equipment have facilitated movement of milk over long distances. The consumer in any part of the country can obtain milk which has been produced on a farm 1,000 or more miles away, Transporting milk over such distances requires equipment of functional design and efficient operation. This study deals with costs of transporting bulk milk over long distances and with costs of transporting packaged milk from plant to distribution centers. Costs for long distance transportation of bulk milk were developed for the Eastern, Midwest, and Western Regions of the United States, and combined for a three-region average. Synthetic cost analysis was used to derive annual fixed costs and variable costs per unit of milk for each region.
