Abstract: The availability of telecommunications services is a necessary, though insufficient prerequisite for economic growth. In combination with transport, education, functioning financial markets, electricity, etc., telecommunications serve as an infrastructure required for any development exceeding that of a subsistence economy. The paper is showing the following relations between telecommunications and economic development: At present the telecommunications services with the highest growth potential and high economic importance are mobile radio services, international telephone traffic, and Internet applications. Investments in the telecommunications infrastructure are a major driving force for economic growth and generate additional GDP between US$ 250 and 500 bn through multiplier effects. Welfare effects for users of telecommunications services may reach a volume of US$ 900 bn per year. Effective use of telecommunications and information technology in companies has a considerable cost-saving potential and is of increasing significance with regard to the international competitiveness.
