 Electricity on Farms in New York and New EnglandJoe F. Davis No 308737, Agricultural Information Bulletins from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service Abstract: Excerpts from the report Summary: This is a report of one of a series of related studies made in different type-of-farming areas. This particular study was made to analyze the experiences of farmers of New York and New England in the use of electricity and electrical equipment as an indication of what the future may hold. The study area included all of New York and New England: the sample was drawn from 37 counties. Records were obtained in June 1952 from 1,115 farms. Of these, 279 were dairy, 271 poultry, 296 other commercial, and 269 noncommercial farms. The 1950 Census of Agriculture provided the basis for weighting when totals or averages for all farms were desired. In 1951, the 210,000 farms in the New York and New England area with central-station electric service used more than 1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity at a cost of almost $26,000,000 for energy alone. This is an average of 5,057 kilowatt-hours and $123.29 per farm. Consumption per farm was 3 times the average of 1942.
