The Distribution of Farm Program Payments, 1987

Robert D. Reinsel

No 309559, Agricultural Information Bulletins from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: This report shows which groups of farms received Government farm program payments in 1987, in what amount, and in what proportion. Since they were started in the 1930’s farm programs have distributed payments to producers of specific commodities based primarily on the producer's volume of production of those commodities. Data from the 1987 Census of Agriculture show that cash grain producers received the majority of payments, the largest proportion of any of the farm types. Farms with over $1 million in sales accounted for only one-half of 1 percent of the farms receiving payments but these farms accounted for over 3 percent of the payments reported.
