Landmarks in the U.S. Dairy Industry

Mark R. Weimar and Don P. Blayney

No 309709, Agricultural Information Bulletins from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: Studying history is useful for understanding many facets of today's dairy industry—including its structure, performance, and relationship to the rest of the U.S. agricultural complex. The landmarks in this history of the U.S. dairy industry have been defined in three categories: 1) those related to milk production and handling on the farm, 2) key events in the processing, manufacturing, and distribution (marketing) of milk and dairy products, and 3) public dairy policy events. The industry's past development shapes ongoing dairy industry issues today.
