Food Stamp Participation of Hired Farmworker Families

Abstract: This report presents a socioeconomic profile of approximately 207,000 hired farmworker families (including 9,000 migrant families) participating in the Food Stamp Program in November 1975 and identifies various factors related to program participation. These families contained approximately 1.1 million family members, averaging 5.3 members per family. Hired farmworker families were almost twice as likely to participate in the Food Stamp Program as all U.S. families. Family income and size, ethnicity, and region were highly associated with farmworker family participation. In addition, the socioeconomic characteristics of farmworker food stamp families differed considerably from those of all hired farmworker families and all U.S. families receiving food stamps.
