No 315997, Farmer Cooperative Research Report (FCRR) from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service
Abstract:
Excerpts from the report: Frozen food locker plants operating in the United States in January 1959 totaled 9,271. This is a decline of 340 plants from last year. Iowa again led with 678 plants, Minnesota came second with 598, and Washington third with 590. South Dakota, Wisconsin, Texas, and Washington registered the greatest decline in number of plants -- 63, 57, 37, and 36, respectively. While the number of locker plants has declined by about 2,300 since the peak year of 1951, many hundreds of new "Freezer Provisioner" or "Freezer Food Plan" enterprises have been established during recent years. The volume of food processed and sold and the number of customers served has been substantially increased.
