Multiquart Containers -- Their Effect on Milk Packaging and Handling Costs in Selected Cooperatives

William J. Monroe

No 316211, Farmer Cooperative Research Report (FCRR) from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: Excerpts from the report: One of the most revolutionary changes occurring in the past 20 years in the dairy industry has been the widespread use of half-gallon and 1- gallon containers for milk. Use of these multiquart containers is likely to increase further for many reasons. This increased use of multiquart containers has had a tremendous impact upon the dairy industry. New containers and new sizes have introduced new flexibility and variety into competitive methods in merchandising. This flexibility probably has had as much effect on the industry as the changes affecting costs and efficiency. The purpose of this report is to describe the practices and costs of eight farmer cooperatives packaging fluid milk in multiquart containers. In addition, it analyzes the alternatives of packaging or not packaging milk in multiquart containers to determine the effect of these containers on costs of packaging and handling milk. A further purpose of this study as reported on here is to provide a basis upon which cooperatives and other firms can make decisions concerning use of multiquart containers in order to maximize net returns to producer patrons or stockholders.
