Margaret A. Branham

No 316375, Miscellaneous Publications from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: Excerpts from the report: The agricultural sector is the most important in Ghana's economy, accounting for approximately 30 percent of the gross domestic product. Farm commodities make up 70 percent of the value of Ghana's total exports. Within the agricultural sector, cocoa is the main cash crop. One-third of the value of agricultural production and two-thirds of export earnings are provided by cocoa. Ghana is the world's largest producer of cocoa, contributing about 30 percent of total production. The United States is Ghana's best market for cocoa products; such imports were valued at $40 million in 1967. U.S. agricultural exports to Ghana include rice, wheat flour, cotton, and inedible tallow.
