No 324749, Miscellaneous Publications from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: Excerpts from the report: This report contains information on the average number of man hours used in an average season to produce an acre of each of some 90 crops; number of hours used in caring for various classes of livestock for a year; number of hours used in producing livestock products, such as a hundredweight of pork, beef, milk, and a hundred dozen of eggs; and data related to the labor requirements, such as average yields of crops, number of livestock on farms, production of livestock, and certain factors for converting livestock labor requirements from a live weight to a dressed weight basis, and for computing the number of man hours needed to harvest crops of various yields. The labor requirements shown are State averages, arrived at by taking into consideration many variations from the average. They are not the result of any special survey, but were "built up" from available data collected by Federal and State agencies. Included in the labor for crop production are the hours for hauling manure, plowing and fitting the land, planting and cultivating, spraying, dusting, pruning, etc., and for harvesting and hauling the crop to storage, local market, or processing plant. The hours for livestock care and production include direct labor only for such operations as feeding, caring for, and disposing of the animals and their products.
