Agricultural Activity in the Ohio River Basin, 1980 and 2010: A Projective Study

Abstract: Excerpts from the report: The Ohio River Basin covers parts of 11 states and comprises a significant portion of the Nation’s agricultural production. The Basin is particularly important in production of feed grains and livestock. Moreover, agriculture plays a key role in the general economy of the Basin. This report provides information on the long-term outlook for output and employment in agriculture in the Basin. Such information is intended to be used in the comprehensive plan for development of the Basin's water resources. The projection model used in this study will be useful in developing estimates of the potential for the improved management of water resources, including drainage, flood control and irrigation. The primary objective of this study is to identify the pattern of land use that farmers in the Basin likely will use to satisfy future agricultural production requirements. A second objective is to develop a projection model that will permit analyses of the effect of agricultural water resource management measures. Other objectives include the development of rural farm population and employment estimates for the sub-basins in the study area.
