Transportation of Agricultural Commodities in the United States: A Bibliography of Selected References, 1949-1959

Nellie G. Larson and C. P. Schumaier

No 330707, Miscellaneous Publications from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: Excerpts from the Introduction: Agricultural products are particularly sensitive to transportation costs because of their bulk and perishability in relation to value. Research aimed at reducing costs or improving service is used by shippers, carriers, and receivers. Research in the data-gathering field serves as a foundation or background for the determination of State and National transportation policies. It is also widely employed by litigants before the transport-regulatory bodies, and by those bodies in arriving at their decisions. Since many firms and many regulatory agencies are involved in transportation, research publications and sources of data and other information are scattered. Technology in transportation is advancing at a rapid rate and it is often difficult to locate up-to-date information on the application of new methods and equipment to present transportation problems. This annotated bibliography was compiled to provide a quick guide to recent publications on agricultural transportation and to factors directly related to transportation such as temperature control, loading and unloading, and container usage. It also provides selected general references and statistical sources on the total transportation system. There is a combined author and subject index.
