Forces Shaping U.S. Agriculture: A Briefing Book

Economic Research Service

No 333361, Miscellaneous Publications from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: Excerpt from the Foreword: USDA‘s Economic Research Service welcomes the conferees gathered in California for the 23rd meeting of the International Association of Agricultural Economists. This briefing book provides an overview of trends and conditions in the American food and agricultural sector, recognizing linkages and interdependencies with nations across the globe. Viewed as an agenda for disciplinary research, the topics covered in the book clearly transcend the traditional boundaries of “agricultural” economics. Farm level production issues remain of paramount importance in assessing food supply response, of course, but changing population demographics and market arrangements require analyses that probe complex determinants of food demand and the means by which these preferences are revealed (or not) in global trading. Transboundary environmental issues are increasingly part of international political dialogue, and economists can help inform debate about appropriate policy intervention.
