Rural Development: The Industrialized Free-Enterprise Nations

Abstract: Most of the nations of the world have expressed concern for rural revitalization by providing a greater range of economic opportunities, social amenities, and cultural advantages. This report discussed rural development in the highly industrialized nations of the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, and Israel. The nations have emphasized the following major elements: improving community facilities and services; increasing economic and investment opportunities; giving attention to institutional and social factors; and establishing a satisfactory system for planning and guiding rural development. The report's emphasis is on policies and programs pertaining to nonagricultural rural development, such as the creation of nonfarm employment opportunities, provision of water and sewer facilities, and construction of houses, schools, clinics, and hospitals. Development activities in the international organizations of the European Community, the European Free Trade Association, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development are briefly discussed.
