No 341029, Miscellaneous Publications from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service
Abstract:
Excerpts from the report: In the first section of the publication the fruits are listed alphabetically, and the color, size, shape, use and quality are briefly given, together with a page reference to the blossoming, picking, consumption and storage periods of the variety, which information is listed by states in the second section. In the second section the chief fruit varieties produced in each state have been arranged approximately in their order of importance in production, starting with the most important variety. The blossoming and picking periods represent the average time at which these events occur for each variety of fruit, either for the state as a whole or for the particular region indicated in the tables. The consumption periods are intended to represent the period in which the bulk of the fruit is marketed, or the marketing season.
