Rural America in the Seventies

Rural America/ Rural Development Perspectives, 1978, vol. 01 RDP

Abstract: After decades of population loss and economic decline, rural America progressed significantly toward improving its social and economic conditions during the seventies. Yet, nonmetro areas continue to lag behind their metro counterparts in terms of wage levels, family income, employment opportunities, adequacy of housing, and access to health and other essential services and facilities. This article presents recent trends and conditions in rural America and some implications for public policymaking.
