Education Has Role in Rural Development

Abstract:
Education has long been prized as a principal means to achieve equal opportunity in American society. Despite greater growth in employment and population in rural than in urban areas, socio-economic equality between rural and urban America remains an elusive goal. Levels of rural poverty, underemployment, and schooling, plus poor housing and health conditions reflect the extent to which rural Americans continue to lag the urban population in their standard of living. Education can help close this gap in socio-economic conditions. If this is to happen, however, education must be a vital element of any broad rural development policy of the Federal Government.
