Abstract:
USDA economists recently analyzed possible tradeoffs among competing goals for a limited-resource, rural-oriented, multicounty area. The study examined, by means of a computer simulation technique known as linear programming, differences in regional growth when alternative objectives were maximized. Two conflicting goals were analyzed: maximizing production within the region and maximizing the number of jobs created in the area for local residents.
