Diversifying Smalltown Economies with Nonmanufacturing Industries
Stephen M. Smith
Rural America/ Rural Development Perspectives, 1985, vol. 02, issue 01
Abstract:
The developing economies of small towns and rural areas need more than just factories. Service industries, too, can generate employment and local income. They are usually cleaner than factories and smaller, so they blend in with the local economy rather than dominating it. This article, based on a survey of service firms in nonmetro Wisconsin, describes what such firms can contribute to the local economy and what they look for in an area when they move.
