Meeting the Growing Challenges of Rural Local Governments

Beverly A. Cigler

Rural America/ Rural Development Perspectives, 1993, vol. 09, issue 01

Abstract: Reduced Federal funding and dramatic economic changes during the past decade make it difficult for local governments to meet their increasing responsibilities. Rural governments are especially disadvantaged, due to low population density, fragmentation of efforts, and a reliance on part-time, volunteer public officials. Effective strategies to help rural governments will consider their unique needs during the policy development stage and improve the management capacity of rural officials.
