MODELS FOR EVALUATING ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF POLICY CHANGES: A COMPARISON

Shwu-Eng H. Webb and Fred Kuchler

No 276832, Staff Reports from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: Three Economic Research Service cross-commodity models were evaluated to determine the advantages and disadvantages of using them for policy analyses. The three economic models are: FAPSIM (Food and Agricultural Policy Simulator), AGSIM (Agricultural Econometric-Simulation Model), and HYBRID (Econometric-Programming Model). The proposed herbicide use restriction of trifluralin on soybeans is used for comparison of the model results. Although the models have many similarities, they do not perfectly substitute for one another. Appropriate model use depends on the question to be answered
