H. Thomas Frey and Roger W. Hexem

No 277624, Staff Reports from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: Preliminary State-by-State estimates of the major uses of land in the United States in 1982 and a brief analysis of changes and trends in land use at the national level are presented. Cropland actually used for crops reached a record 390 million acres in 1981 but fell to a PIK-influ- - enced level of 335 million acres in 1983. The entire land area of the country is broadly classed as cropland, grassland pasture and range,. forest land, special-use areas, and other land. Numerous subclasses reflect component agricultural and nonagricultural uses.
