DEVELOPING FINANCIAL INDICATORS FOR U.S. FARMS BY TYPE OF FARM

Sara D. Short

No 277790, Staff Reports from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: Aggregate financial data are inadequate for monitoring the farm financial position, given the heterogeneity of today's farm sector. This report summarizes current efforts to further develop a more disaggregated perspective of financial indicators. Balance sheets and various financial ratios are presented by type of farm for selected years. Although the analysis performed indicates that most types of farms experienced some deterioration in their financial position between 1969 and 1982, the development of micro measures is needed to obtain more reliable and accurate barometers of the financial well-being of farms.
