U.S. Agricultural Trade with the Developed Pacific Rim, 1968-88

No 278328, Staff Reports from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: This statistical compendium presents data on U.S. agricultural exports and imports with the developed Pacific Rim countries (Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada) for 1968-88. Export and import data are presented by quantity and value for both fiscal and calendar years. Growth in U.S. agricultural exports to the developed Pacific Rim countries between 1968 and 1988 has exceeded growth in total U.S. agricultural exports. The share of U.S. agricultural exports going to these seven countries ranged from 28 to 35 percent between 1968 and 1979 and increased steadily in the eighties to reach almost 40 percent in 1988. Taiwan and South Korea have been the fastest growing markets for U.S. agricultural exports. Nearly a quarter of U.S. imports now come from these countries. One serious limitation: U.S. data substantially understate U.S. agricultural exports to Canada because of undocumented shipments.
