Abstract:
The Upper Tana Catchment Natural Resources Management Project (UTaNRMP), implemented in Kenya between 2012 and 2022, aimed to reduce poverty and improve natural resource management among 300,000 households dependent on agriculture, livestock, and related livelihoods. An impact assessment found that the project significantly increased net crop income (41%), productive asset ownership (14%), crop productivity, and market access. These gains were largely driven by greater use of irrigation systems and improved seeds, particularly for fruits, vegetables, and cash crops. Beneficiaries also experienced better housing conditions and improved dietary diversity. However, results in the livestock sector were limited, with little impact on overall income. The assessment also highlighted weaker food security outcomes among women, underscoring the need for stronger gender targeting.
