Abstract:
The Livestock and Market Development Project II (LMDP II), implemented in Kyrgyzstan from 2014 to 2021, aimed to improve livestock productivity, pasture management, and climate resilience through community-based pasture management and veterinary services. An impact assessment based on data from 3,002 households found that beneficiaries made greater use of remote pastures, adopted more seasonal grazing rotations and reported better pasture management. The value of livestock production increased by 69 per cent, overall household income rose by 43 per cent, and poverty fell by 25 percentage points. Food insecurity declined, and women’s participation in pasture committees and livestock activities improved. However, livestock numbers grew without significant productivity gains, raising sustainability concerns. The study recommends stronger market linkages, productivity investments, awareness campaigns and greater support for women’s empowerment.
