Scope and Methods of the Statistical Reporting Service

United States Department of Agriculture Statistical Reporting Service

No 320022, USDA Miscellaneous from United States Department of Agriculture

Abstract: USDA's Statistical Reporting Service, through a network of State Statistical Offices, surveys farms, ranches, and businesses to make estimates on every aspect of U.S. agriculture. This volume describes methods and procedures, including survey design, data collection, and report preparation. It details estimation programs for field crops, vegetables, fruit, nuts, livestock, poultry, other crops, agricultural prices, and farm wages. Extensive research underway to improve methods includes assessing crops by satellite, simulating plant growth by computer, expanding use of objective surveys, streamlining data collection and processing, and reducing nonsampling errors.
