Abstract:
Excerpts from the report: The Minnesota River Basin is located in the southern third of the State of Minnesota. The drainage area of the basin includes about 16,770 square miles; 14,840 in Minnesota, 1,610 in South Dakota, and 320 in Iowa. The basin includes all or parts of 37 counties in Minnesota, three counties in Iowa, and six counties in South Dakota. The objectives of the USDA’s participation in this study is to identify alternatives for the orderly development of water and related land resources in upstream waterbeds and determine the effect of upstream developments on downstream problems. The basin-wide comprehensive water and related land resource plan was developed and based on problems and needs identified by local, regional, and state organizations. The Southern Minnesota Rivers Basin Commission coordinated the input and based the plan selection on alternative proposals developed by the river basin planning staff of the Department of Agriculture.
