Bark and Its Possible Uses

Abstract: What to do with bark is a major question facing the wood conversion industries. Optimum utilization of bark residues demands appreciation of the complexity of bark and the extreme variation in chemical and physical properties between barks of different wood species. This report discusses bark structure, past and present utilization, and methods of upgrading bark both physically and chemically for increased utilization. Pertinent literature citations and continuing bibliographic sources of information on bark are included. Appended directories indicate sources of technical assistance and utilization equipment.
