Increasing Feedstock Production for Biofuels: Economic Drivers, Environmental Implications, and the Role of Research

Interagency Feedstock Team and Biomass Research and Development Board

No 413099, USDA Miscellaneous from United States Department of Agriculture

Abstract: The Biomass Research and Development Board (Board) commissioned an economic analysis of feedstocks to produce biofuels. The Board seeks to inform investments in research and development needed to expand biofuel production. This analysis focuses on feedstocks; other interagency teams have projects underway for other parts of the biofuel sector (e.g., logistics). The analysis encompasses feedstocks for both conventional and advanced biofuels from agriculture and forestry sources. Contents: Executive Summary --- Chapter 1: Introduction --- Chapter 2: Overview of Potential Feedstocks --- Chapter 3: Feedstock and Biofuel Market Interactions --- Chapter 4: Feedstock Sources – Scenarios for the Future --- Chapter 5: Corn-Based Ethanol and the Changing Agricultural Landscape --- Chapter 6: Cellulosic-Based Ethanol and the Contribution from Agriculture and Forestry --- Chapter 7: Greenhouse Gas Implications --- Chapter 8: Sustainability and Criteria for Biofuels --- Chapter 9: Prioritizing Research and Its Dividends --- References.
