Abstract:
I thought I'd give you a little background. As I came in this morning and saw your group, it reminded me of when I was in Washington two years ago with the Ag forum group and we were trying to work on the farm bill. I went to one meeting there, and it was after NCA had decided to get into the political forum. A number of issues had been coming through Congress and the country concerning grain subsidies that at least indirectly affected the cattlemen. The cattle industry was not supported in any way, but we decided to get onto the playing field. So, when I attended these meetings, they really wondered where I came from. What are the cattle people doing back here? Well, we were there to stomp, hopefully, on a few toes and get some things changed. I can recall there were about 300 people in the room. I was a panel leader. When I took the podium, I asked how many producers were there. There were five producers out of the 300. The rest were from the USDA or economists from universities around the country. They (you) basically are developing policy that we have to live with. And I say this in the truest sense of the word, because we're the ones out there meeting the payroll every week or every two weeks and it's our dollars that are at risk. You know what the cattle industry has been going through for the past 13 years.
