Abstract: The reform of the Belgian social security pension system is at the agenda for years. Considering its financing mechanism based on pay as you go and the well-known aging process influencing our population, the financial sustainability of our regime is under threat for the following decades. But other reasons to reform the existing system are as much important. Our mechanisms are often unfair and far from being transparent. Therefore, financial sustainability, social adequacy, equity and communication must be simultaneously addressed. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to present various challenges to consider such as flexibility of the retirement age, intergenerational equity of funding or convergence between regimes and to propose a new universal architecture for our first pillar of pension, based on pension accounts and able to match these requirements.
