A Critical Look at Race and Language as a Method of Establishing Personal Identity in Japan and Korea

Abstract: The author raises the question of race and language as a valid concept for biological or social classification and expands this point to inquire how Japanese and Korean societies determine who belongs as societal members. Marginality and ambiguity create separate criteria for determining who is Japanese or Korean.
