The world of work in Latin America and the Caribbean in the context of the new energy geopolitics

Abstract: This article examines the reconfiguration of the world of work in Latin America and the Caribbean in the context of the new energy geopolitics. Drawing on the five structural trends identified by the International Labour Organization (ILO) —demographic transition, technological change, climate and productive transformation, informality, and governance— it analyses the mechanisms through which energy shocks and geopolitical fragmentation affect employment, wages, productive structures, and state capacities. It also explores regional heterogeneity, opportunities linked to critical minerals, and the challenges posed by artificial intelligence. It concludes that labor outcomes will depend on the strength of institutions and public policies.
