Ethical principles in the origins of Political Economy

Abstract: There is a new and specific form of conflict between meritocracy and the notion of equality. The origin of this conflict could be found in the transition from old communities towards modern society, shaped by the imperative to work, by the social esteem work receives in detriment of leisure, and by the high praise that production and mercantile activities enjoy nowadays. This work is focused on the nature of this conflict -which certainly belongs to the ethics world- from the perspective of the father of modern political economy, Adam Smith.The corollary would be to understand the direction public policy should adopt and the contemporary debate about justice.
