Abstract: Introduction. Encouraging and supporting private investors' activities is crucial for sustainable economic advancement. Given the growing role of private investors in the financial market, each Russian Federation entity's authorities should understand which aspects of the investment process need to be influenced. The research object is to develop an approach to assess private investors' investment activity in the Russian Federation regions, the results of which can be used to tailor the regional authorities' investment strategy. Methods. The theoretical and methodological foundation of the research are the ideas of national and foreign economists who examine the problem of investment, its influence on economic development, including various economic entities' investment activity issues. Results and Discussion. An original approach to evaluating private investors' investment activity in the Russian Federation regions is suggested. The approach's essence lies in using indicators that depict the varying factors of private investors' investment activity depending on the region. The presentation of results consists of the ranking of the studied regions based on the private investors' investment activity index and region cards. The developed methodology's approbation was conducted for the Siberian Federal District regions. The regions were ranked by private investors' investment activity level based on the calculated private investors' investment activity index. Conclusion. An original interpretation of the term "private investors' investment activity" is proposed; four existing methods for evaluating the investment activity of various investor types are examined and detailed; an original approach to evaluating the private investors' investment activity in Russian regions is introduced; a unique method for calculating a private investor's investment activity index, used within the context of evaluating private investors' investment activity in Russian regions, is explained; the developed method was tested for the regions of the Siberian Federal District.
