Abstract: The article deals with two main issues: the role of the overall assessment of the publication activity within scientometrics, and also features the use of the publication activity abroad and in Russia. Publication activity is investigated on the basis of statistical and analytical materials present in databases «Web of Science» and «Scopus»; Russian scientists and Russian scientific journals indexed in both systems, along with foreign authors and publications, which gives an opportunity to compare the publication activity in two different contexts – national and international.
