Abstract: In 2013 Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree providing for the switch of not less than 50% of public road transport from oil products to gas in cities with population of more than one million by 2020. It is thought that this switch will allow to decrease greenhouse gas emissions. The article is devoted to the analysis of economic efficiency of fuel switch and consequences for Russian ecology. The main result of this paper is that the fuel switch there will not lead to dramatic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. However, there is a huge economic potential to reduce energy consumption costs since gas prices are much lower than diesel/gasoline prices.
